Distribution Research - 1

There is a traditional distribution model for distributing film. Although this model has been changing recently due to popularity of streaming services such as Netflix, online and video on demand. The traditional way is to release the film into theaters first after a few months of advertising and however long taken to produce the film. These is the pre-theatrical stages.  From there on average the films are in theaters for 4 weeks and in at least 2,000 theaters, usually with a two week minimum unless profit made is a flop. The main profit is made in the first two/three weekends, this is when the excitement for the film is most prominent still. The production company and movie theater make much of the money from this, yet the movie theater bases its profit also off high priced drinks and food from the theater. Also a day & date theatrical/VOD release is when a film is released in theaters and is also available to rent or buy on  VOD (video on demand) provider at the same time. Traditionally though there is the stand waiting time between theatrical release and release to VOD, this being 30-60 days from the end of time available in theater. This is to maximize marketing efforts. And build excitement. On video on demand the average price point is 4.99 HD, 3.99 SD ranging from services. After all of these stages comes the Pay TV window. This is the time where the company will chose if it wants to give rights to a subscription service. This is a service that allows people who subscribe to it and pay a monthly fee access to films. Examples of these subscription services are Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus and HBO.  Said service will offer a license fee to the film producer and the money will then be divided accordingly. Another option is pay TV channels who will pay, they are TV channels you have to pay a premium to have for example HBO movies or showtime. From  that point on all maximum profits have already been made and then they can decide what they want to do with there film. And if they want to give rights to regular TV channels to release their movie. These are all the traditional ways films are distributed and all very good ways the my group and I would consider using for our film for maximum marketing effort.
